Port Colborne in search of Canada 150 events

Port Colborne’s Canada 150 Committee is putting together a list of events taking place this year to celebrate the country’s sesquicentennial anniversary.

There will be 12 days of celebration from June 20 to July 1, with inclusive events for everyone in the community.

The committee has received funds from the Canada 150 Grant to assist with activities.

The committee is looking to hear from residents about any ideas or other events being put on to celebrate. Details can be sent to pccanada150@portcolborne.ca.

Budget meetings continue Thursday

After three meetings, Port Colborne has yet to finalize the municipal budget for 2017.

Mayor John Maloney told council Monday night the meetings would continue Thursday in council chambers at 5:30 p.m. He invited the public to attend.

Services available for seniors

Carrie-Lynne Sonnes, co-ordinator of volunteer services for Community Support Services Niagara, attended Port Colborne council Monday night to talk about some of the services available through CSSN.

She said the almost entirely volunteer-run organization works to help seniors with snow removal, transportation, by providing Meals on Wheels and much more.

Even phone calls and visits are among what the organization does to combat the isolation seniors might feel.

Sonnes said the program’s offices are now located in Seaway Mall.
