Pursued car crashes through Welland cemetery

The driver of a stolen vehicle attempted to avoid arrest Monday by driving through a Welland cemetery.

Niagara Regional Police spotted a stolen vehicle from Waterloo on Niagara Street in Welland. When police pursued the vehicle the driver jumped the curb at the intersection of Niagara Street and Woodlawn Road and entered Holy Cross Cemetery.

The driver hit two grave stones, dislodging them and dragging them, police said.

The vehicle finally came to a stop on Woodlawn Road where police arrested two people.

Chelsey Roepke, 18, is charged with possession of property obtained by crime and flight from police; 22-year-old Christopher Evanoff of Cambridge is charged with possession of property obtained by crime.

Police put cemetery damages at about $2,500.
